1000w CSI lamp gear?

Postby FrontSideBus » Sat Feb 05, 2022 5:08 pm

Hi all, when I used to want to fire up a 1000w CSI lamp, I used to drag out a 1000w SON choke and run it in parallel with a 400w SON choke.
That combo gave the required lamp current of about 15 amps but it had some issues, namely it was a PITA wiring it all up and now the gear I used to use are now in their own enclosures which rules it out completely now.
I've decided to build a dedicated gearbox for running these lamps but I'm not sure on what gear to use.
I've read somewhere that 3 x 400w SON chokes will give the right lamp current? Obviously I just want to confirm before I got and plop £40 each on some 400w SON chokes!
Any info would be nice so I can crack on!

I’m fairly sure that 3 x 400W SON chokes were often used to operate these lamps.
I recall seeing an eBay listing with this setup a few years back. I would have gone for it but it was collection only and of course miles away!

Cheers. I've ordered 3 chokes anyway. Even if the chokes get a bit hot it won't be used for long anyway.
I'm not sure if I'm going to have a simple push-to-make switch to trigger the HV pulse transformer or have a proper timer which triggers the ignitors for about 3 seconds or so when power is applied.

I have been looking up on the 1975/6 Thorn lighting catalogue on James Hooker's site see HERE and scroll down to page 304 and 305, they show 3 x G53230.T Ballasts, also look on Page 295 they are listed as 400w SON Ballasts, so yes you can use 3 x 400w SON Ballasts connected in Parallel to run a 1000 watt CSI Lamp though saying this you need 8 x 25uf Capacitors in Parallel too, to get 200uf power Factor Correction,

8 is overkill. 4 x 50 mic do the job. Or even two 100's.

Yes imagine opening a Gear Box for these CSI Floodlights and finding a huge Bank of Capacitors,

You should have seen inside one of the printing machines that I used to work on years ago... It had contactless fusing which was basically a massive big xenon flashtube in it.
In the cabinet under the machine was a massive big array of big capacitors and I think the whole bank was like 3 or 4 farrads (not microfarads!) at about 600v!!!
