Old electrical accessories to go with fittings

Postby Beta 5 » Mon Jun 02, 2025 9:12 pm

Thinking about installing some of my older fluorescent fittings and older bulkheads etc and it would be nice to pair them with some equally vintage electrical installation materials to make the full installation period correct.

Anyone got any suggestions for the types of wiring accessories that would complement them well?

So far for a future possible installation I am thinking of something like a combination of old MK grid metal clad grid switches and black enamel steel conduit.
Also the older greenish-grey painted steel trunking that used to be common, a replica of that could maybe be achieved by spraying some modern galvanised steel trunking?
Of course to be really fussy wiring in old colours too!

Pity this isn't something you were asking 20yrs ago. The amount of old stuff I used to rip out and bin back then was unbelievable... :(

Yes that's what I've found sadly, a lot of the old stuff is getting thin on the ground now :( I've got a few old MK switch modules but the EM key switches are hard to come by as are the back boxes. Seems to be a few front plates and grids available online but at a cost though!

Of course for the full installation I'd need sockets too though those are likely all getting worn out now if not NOS.
I was thinking if I can't get enough old stuff together maybe going for Crabtree rockergrid as they do seem to have a slightly older look about them still with the smaller size back boxes etc compared to modern MK.

BE WARNED!!! Crabtree is now a discontinued name, along with Volex, Britmac and Appleby. Siemens who own Electrium, the brand under which they all operate has decided to discontinue them. If you do go this route, make sure you have sufficient parts / spares as they won't be available in the future...

Thanks for the advice! If I do go down that route I'll buy a load of stock then!
