To me it seems that most of these electrician youtuber have a stick up their arse. Sorry but your a professional and it seems like thinks like a rewire-able fuse affrais you… And the constant fetish of installing the newest, cheapest , soft plastic bullshit…

It seems that the only goal is the satisfaction of neat looking wirering in a fuse box. What is fitted is completely garbage, but hey that keeps customers…

And allways keep filming so maybe bosh will stick their tools up your arse, so they get free promotion for questionable tools…

Again I agree when I was doing the NG repairs we would often go to peoples houses that still had wooden backed wylex CU’s with no RCD and rewireable fuses - when I was at school we had old Crabtree C50 boards with breakers that may or may not of worked not a RCD in sight infact a lot of the schools were like that until relatively recently. This is one in a school that only got changed last week - no one died it all still worked and was quite neat. Now the modern electricians think if there is no RCD on some sockets it’s instant death for anyone who uses them. Everyone is such H&S mad pussies these days.

Some old breakers from the 70s were real shit tbh. Ones which case is just clipped together with some plastic latches and are blown apart and to pieces if they get some big short. Ones which contact inside can remain welded together while the handle is OFF. Three phase ones that can trip internally on one phase only and leave two phases connected to a motor. Ones that just jam left right and center. The jamming ones aren't even some obscure off-brand, they are Stotz-Kontakt (nowadays ABB), just an old model...

Its not all old breakers, there are a few specific models (and i know which ones), some of which happened to be common in one or another estate that was built in specific years

You can say that the few of those that are still out there have somehow survived 50 years and nothing happened, but whether it is a case of "replace now or die" is really situation dependent

If noting changed, statistically odds are that nothing will happen if you dont touch them for another day, even if they are defective to the point of not being able to trip for a short

If something changed, the situation that will create the immediate danger may have not existed yesterday, but appeared exactly now

Case in point, i have a few CU's that were removed from air raid shelters here in Oct 2023, one of them still with those exploding AGAR breakers (in others they were already replaced back in 2006). They have waited for decades in an empty underground shelter, with nothing happening. Then one day people run downstairs, turn on lights and pumps, only to discover that their insulation got destroyed by decades in the moist atmosphere and they all short out the moment power is turned on

Also, take into account how much new work had been done in many installs over the years - and especially by this very kind of "bright sparks" with this very kind of construction material

A bunch of switchstart fittings installed in a location in the 70s and no RCD is a non issue. They would remain non issue to this day and to the future if they were left alone

Consider them being replaced by some Chinese shit where line voltage is separated from the chassis by a hair, Earth is cut and turned aside by whoever installed it, all fitted to a T-bar ceiling frame which isn't Earthed either, and a water main outside was replaced by PVC without a jumper

Now an RCD might be very really the only thing that would save somebody from dying there...
