They do get much hotter than standard 20W! Eliot knows more about this set up but sure it works!

No, solved it, lamp I was using was one of those fake Chinese things that says it's 40w but is actually just a 20w tube with 40w printed on it. Thought I'd binned all of those, just chucked it in the lamp bin and stuck a Luxram in it and seems much happier (and a sensible temp).

This one seems to run on on this 250v 130w carbon filament lamp. They appear to just be standard 20w tubes but with cathodes for 4' 36/40w tubes.
