Seems dipping the filament in pig piss makes an incandescent light bulb 40% efficient (that’s 25% more efficient than an LED lamp)!

I heard it on the news this morning, as Kev pointed out though, this idea could be bought out by the LED lobby, and consigned to the bin of history?

If these do take off wouldn't that be a complete U turn! Would be awsome if we saw a return of tungsten street lighting etc! Guess it depends how cheep the lamps become! If they are pence like existing GLS and more efficient than LED we may see a complete U turn.
But as I said to rich earlier we may also never ever hear of this again (covered up by led manufactures)

I think your partly right. The CFL/LED and Chinese lobby will shit on it from high or industry will just "forget" about it. The only other concern would be short lifespan which I think will always be their downfall however if they are pennies each to make and A LOT easier to recycle than CFL/LED who cares.

The best things MIT can do is put the technology into the public domain so there is no single owner of the technology for the LED lobby to "buy out and sink"

Don't forget, IF and this is a big IF, this technology doesn't get brought out by the led company's and it IS as efficient as they claim we could see the entire range come back again, crown silver lamps for shops PAR 38 tungsten halogen for flood lighting the lot! As for the life of the lamps don't forget that there were tungsten lamps for special application where the life span was up to 20,000 hours! (With a huge decrease in efficiency) but with this technology who knows? Wonder if this will be the last we hear of it?

Needs more evidence at the minute?, lumen per watt figures and the likes, its not good enough for them to just say, `scientists believe`, thats how LED started, the whole 50,000 hours and 200 lm/W thing that turned out to be false!

I would like to see a WORKING tested prototype?

There does seemed to be some big names backing it, namely the Army????

No, I`m still not impressed, reading this, they seem to be still limited to the melting point of tungsten?
Theres only so much heating you can do to a tungsten wire, (whether or not their reflecting more and more heat back to the filament over and over again), before it will physically melt, and i doubt thats anywhere near 100 lm/W???

Unless the big neck and bigger bulb size?
