I have a thorn emergency light that uses a glass diffuser and looks like a standard 60w GLS bulkhead. the non maintained gear that was in it just put up a firework display when I powered it up.
Whats the best way (without killing the tube by over running it) of running these 4w tubes? Does a ballast for these even exist?

I think it would be close to spec on 8W T5 ballast (even if run as 1x4W tube), for such low voltage tubes it makes virtually no difference. The ballast will run somewhat hotter tho

Most of this has already been said, but; most 8w magnetic ballasts that I've come across will also run 1x4, 1x6w or 2x4w tubes in series. Alternatively there's electronic HF ballasts for 4w tubes out there. Examples below:

Helvar L8D magnetic ballast: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HELVAR-L8D-2 ... SwdjNZCI75

Osram HF ballast: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Osram-Quickt ... SwlApbpgCH

Appoogies for the lack of response on here, BT have managed to change my home number & F*ck up my broadband in the process! I managed to find a hevlar magnetic ballast (from the same seller you listed Danny) thats rated for 1x4w (or 6 or 8W) also discovered that the matchbox blue philips electronic's dont absolutely hammer the tubes like a arlen electronic ballast I tried!
