Elex 2016 Surrey

Postby Slyspark » Fri Nov 04, 2016 1:01 pm

So, today I'm at Elex 2016, the electrical and lighting trade show at Sandown Racecourse in Esher, Surrey. Having now gone all the way around the stands it's sad to see that the ONLY lighting technology on display is LED. Not so much as even a T5 fluorescent now, just LED. Half the stuff on show is displayed on walls, so you're blinded by the LED glare if you dare to go near. Quite a few big players here, even people like Fitzgerald only have LED on offer. A sad sign of the times!

Just got home with a massive headache, think my retinas are probably still suffering from all those glary LED's, I can still see diodes burned into them. Got excited on the Edd way out when in spotted a 2-D lamp, but turned out to just be lighting a hand tool sales stand....

All the wholesalers are the same, shop lights, display lights, even the warehouse lighting is now LED!

Really fucks me off as they consider LED is the fucking Holy Grail of lighting used in everything from GLS replacement, Floor/High Bay lighting even automotive lighting. The fact some shit drivers make LEDs flicker to hell doesn't matter.

I think part of the MOT test ought to check for 120Hz flicker - that will rule Volvo, Aldi, VW and some Fords out as they generally suffer from 120 Hz corner eye flicker.

In fairness LED street lights have improved but they don't give out "proper light" they only give a fuck ugly cold ghostly clinical blue/white glow which is pointing straight down, not illuminating the surrounding areas. You know what I'm sure LED would used the equivalent power as HPS if it was also to light as much of the surrounding area an HPS does.

As mentioned before, the fact the fitting gives a shit performance doesn't matter.. All that matters is its LED - Almost as annoying as Sony's slogan - "It's a Sony"

LED traffic lights are too fookin bright! Completely dazzles you and destroys your night vision!
