Fucking beggars belief!
Maybe a bit of a late headline but it got my attention today, the EU and more specifically Jean-Claude is set to close the loophole in the "Light bulb efficiency ban" that allowed incandescents to be sold if they are for specialist purposes, eg. industrial / non domestic use.
It is almost unbelievable what the exemption clauses, basically can an LED replace it? If the answer is yes then its its a ban . If not it MUST be a signal lamp and have a <2% failure per 1,000 hours.
Its basically just like the shit at work - they cant stop you doing something but they cover as many bases as they can to prevent you.
In a recent report for Which magazine shown 43% of their readers still use incandescent lights (Halogen/Inkies) despite the claimed benefits of CFL and LED and low costs being widely known. Why can the in the EU get it though their thick skulls not everyone likes or is unable to use LED or CFL hence thats why they are still using traditional light.
My brother tried a CFL and LED light in the outside light (with a PIR movement sensor) either the lamps didn't like the sensor or the sensor didn't like the lamp as all he got out of it was a blink every couple of seconds. Put the GLS back in and it worked fine.
Yet again its the EU telling us we are to stupid and irresponsible to make our own decisions in life

Come as standard now in many fridges and even freezers in supermarkets. LEDs are quite suited to those applications as they don't get hot. An oven on the other hand, that I'd like to see! lol

I just hope Marien la Pen gets elected for the French General election. From what I read she is the French version of Nigel. Her no 1 priority would be to hold an EU referendum and if they vote Frexit when watch the EU dominoes fall!

I think it's only a matter of time before Europe implodes, everyone's had enough except for the greedy Euro MP's - they just can't get enough. Enough of our money that is

If you read it carefully, this change actually opens even more new loopholes than the one it attempts to close! Result is that it might sound intimidating, but in reality is powerless to phase out such lamps.

How do you work that out James? The way I read it is unless its a traffic signal lamp or if there is already an LED equivalent its a ban if its an incandescent?

From outside it might look tough, but there are ways around it when necessary. Check the definitions of what grounds can be used to make a product a special product The big loophole here is that the regulation tries to control applications instead of products. It's fairly easy to make any product special according to the guidelines given, and once the product has been placed on the market with that intention, it's up to the consumer to choose whether they want to apply it only in that special application, or to misuse it eg for lighting their living rooms!

Are you meaning like the "Heat globe" product? Basically an inky sold as a low power heater that happens to give off light as a by-product?

They'll work just fine in a fridge or freezer, in fact, ideally suited to these applications as they won't get hot. Good luck with anyone trying to put one in an oven however. Still, nothing wrong with things like that staying filament, most are only 15 or 40w at most, hardly the biggest user of energy!
