osram shaw sox factory

Hello All, i've always wondered why osram shut the shaw factory and stopped sox production. If they didn't want sox lamps anymore why did they transfer to philips for their sox lamps? osram shaw were perhaps the best sox lamps ever made. Were gec sox made at shaw aswell?

Yeah, there was only 3, Shaw, Hamilton and Leicestershire, cost was possibly the real reason, every one was selling out to China, so GEC and Thorn must have decided, "well Hamilton still making them, so we don`t have to".

The SOX market started declining about 15yrs go when the lifetime of SON lamps was extended so as to permit a 4-year relamping cycle. That negated the energy savings of SOX and its more expensive 2-3yr relamping cycle, and it proved not possible to bring SOX lifetime up to the same level, so it fell out of fashion. Since a significant part of the overheads of Shaw factory were funded by SOX, its decline gradually made the factory less viable. You can read the full details at
