8' 125W tube opportunity

Postby BC5-80 » Thu Oct 29, 2015 7:00 pm

A couple of weeks ago I was offered a nearly full box at a knock-down price at my local wholesalers. Is it worth going for? He said it's dead stock and he'll never shift them otherwise. Is there really no call for them anywhere any more? Anyone on here interested?

The 100w tubes are hard to find these days but from what I can tell there is little demand for the 125w tubes which explains why the wholesaler can't shift them. They would be definitely worth having if they are nice and cheap!

I got them last Friday. I was stung compared to what he said originally because there were only 18 serviceable tubes and he charged £20 plus VAT, so they worked out at £1.33 each. :) They are Sylvania White 535, so pretty boring on that front.

Here's something a bit more interesting though. He said he's got plenty of 8' 85W in White and Cool White waiting for me whenever I want, although I won't believe it until I actually see them. I can't imagine any of those being available for decades. If they are real I'll try to knock him down on the price in view of the previous fleecing. :D Any call for 85-Watters on here? Then I'll need to ask around for some old 85W ballast stock. I've never owned anything in 8' 85W before.

They could be cool lamps, last time I saw one was at a railway station underpass about 25 years ago! One of my tubes says Dual Wattage 85/125W, so the ballast requirement must be similar!

Last time I repaired any 85W 8' fitting was 2006 in a pound stretcher in Penzance. It was a former tesco and I used GB GE F85/840 lamps and Philips MCFE Pro 85W / 84! Sadly a lot of the twin lamp QS gear was dead! Mind you the fittings were 1968 AA3
