Just Chuck It Out!

Put anything here that's badly designed/made, failed, catastrophically exploded or just an epic fail in a general sort of way.

Just Chuck It Out!

Postby Slyspark » Fri Sep 22, 2017 10:08 pm

So, the last few yrs have seen a trend for replacing lighting that's hardly done any service at all. Stuff that hasn't even seen a lamp change, that's how new it is when it gets ripped out and binned. Both in the streetlighting sector as well as commercial premises and offices. Now it seems we've reached a whole new level of waste! So, today I go to the wholesalers in the evening (they have an airlock you can pick stuff up from out-of-hours). Sat in the carpark is a skip. It's full of brand new, boxed fluorescent lighting. 600x600 lay ins for 4x 18w T8 as well as 600x600 single 55w PL-L fittings with a gullwing and small central louvred section and sealed clean room fittings. Seems to me to be criminal to just bin stuff like this - the boxes have never even been opened!

Made sure I saved enough for an upcoming job where they'd be ideal :) Was going to order something from said wholesalers, but fine if they want to just give it away, more profit for me!

There seems to be a general attitude, by no means limited to the lighting sector where by if something isn't brand new, it is old and in need of replacement. I know of someone recently who had a car from 2014 with 33k on the clock, barely run in, suddenly replaced it a few months ago. Why? Because it was getting old and the mileage was high according to them. The Liverpool Women's hospital that was built in the mid 90s is now according to some not fit for purpose and needs replacing! The Liverpool Students union building, built 1983, scheduled for demolition. I find it really annoying, especially when people then wonder why there is no money for essentials.
