I liked this bit, "The 85W tubes were fazed out some time ago.", he sounded quite good until I saw this strange new word, `fazed`????????
I saw the classic, `starter motor` come up too, surly it wasn`t impossible for him to locate a 6 foot T12?

Every time I read this thread it gets worse.
"Buy a warm white tube. If it still doesn't work, then the problem may be in the ballast"
"Just replace the whole fitting. Then you'll know exactly what you're dealing with" -Just why. This isn't helpful

A t12 tube would of been easy to source back in 2008 when this thread was posted. I wonder what the fitting was.

Back in 2008, before the EU dictatorship decided "T12 = BAD", I would think you could have bought a 6ft T12 from any DIY shed
...I wonder what the fitting was.
Oddly enough, the link the OP put to their Tiscali web-space no longer works, I can't think why lol! I was wondering the same, Philips PC440 ballast suggests it would have been some version of a Philips Streamlite/Crompton Crompack
