Vigilante relamping!

Just done a spot of vigilante relamping at work. This tunnel is steel sheeted with no insulation so it's pretty cold in the winter months. The tubes previously fitted were Philips 5' 51w eco which were very dim when cold. I've swapped them all for 58w Sylvania's which will be better in the cold. The 51w tubes have been fitted somewhere warmer!

Nice one! Those 51w tubes are completely unsuitable for use outdoors! What are the EM fittings below then?
FrontSideBus   [10 Oct, 2019 at 11:09 PM]
Lol nice one.

The EM fittings below are modern(ish) Thorn things, although a couple have been changed for cheap LED shite
Slyspark   [11 Oct, 2019 at 12:09 AM]
Oh, modern thorn EM fittings are shit too, just not as shit as the LED ones will be!

Ive got one of them 51w things. Dont know whats in it but it has no trouble starting on SRS
fluorescent   [11 Oct, 2019 at 12:08 PM]
Interesting, I'll have to try one out on SRS/QS!
Slyspark   [11 Oct, 2019 at 12:47 PM]
Same gas filling as a T12 tube, so yes, they will!

I know the 50w "HF" lamps have the same/similar gas filling to T12 lamps and start on SRS/QS, I didn't know about these 51w eco lamps.

Edit: come to think about it, there was a load of Crompton Star fittings at work that got relamped with these tubes by the bufoons on days. They mostly didn't strike up and were left with the ends glowing for weeks/months Sad

Did you ever do the tunnel with the mercs in adam?
fluorescent   [11 Oct, 2019 at 04:07 PM]
Nope, haven't even been down in that tunnel for probably a year or so. I do have some 80w merc lamps now, albeit CED shite, might have to bang a few in to see how long they last!
Kev   [11 Oct, 2019 at 09:00 PM]
You should do it. Are many of them out? Hopfully some dick hasn’t ripped them out in the mean time
fluorescent   [12 Oct, 2019 at 03:19 PM]
There will be a few out now, lots of them had gone dim & green too. I'll go down there next chance I get to investigate

It may not be entirely dependent on the lamps. I have experimented with 6 ELTAM SR40 SRS ballasts (from the 80s, based on the "U" ballast series) a while back outside, as the night was coming and moisture in the air rising. They had no problem starting 36W T8's while the air was still dry, but came to the point where they didn't start most of the times when the tubes became damp. Some would start if you touched the tube. I have seen some places where 36's are used on SRS indoors and in most of them they start ok, no one noticing that it isnt supposed to work like that
