Experiment 0 Just consider this for a moment, back in May 2018, I did a test, running an 18 watt SOX in a Beta 5, (on full 35 watt gear), this was in my brother in law’s light, and 2 years on, (running over voltage and current), here’s the lamp removed yesterday!, yes it went black, but look more at the ‘socks’, or lack of them around it’s cathodes!, on a lamp on the wrong gear after two years nightly service!

The left cathode looks skinnier there! I dare say this lamp wouldnt of lasted too much longer!

It looks to of blackened different to your N718s. Didnt they all blacken from the top down to the cap?
