Thorn Clipper 3X75w SRS, gear
|
Acquired today, this triple tube Thorn Clipper dating to 1976, and what a cracker it is. The Clipper has to be the most versatile range Thorn ever made, it was made in all lengths, came with a wide range of attachments, and even had its own rail system allowing one to install end to end without looking too intrusive. Sadly at some point a lamp holders been smashed, needless to say they've done a good job of it too. Overall though, its in great condition, if not a bit rusted.
I will be utilising this fitting in the empty space left on the ceiling in my lighting shed, it'd just be rude not to. The plan is to restore it, involving a standard strip down to bare metal and rust proof, but I'll also have a replacement lamp holder 3D printed, a first for any restoration I've ever done.
The idea is to use the intact existing lamp holder as a template, from there I will skim fill and sand the replicated example to remove any lines, and then take the intact original to be colour matched so I can spray the replicated one to an original colour, so as to make it look like nothings ever been replaced.
Inside, the gear is in good condition, its just extremely dusty and small flecks of rust are beginning to push through. I will carefully remove and sand the rust off the ballasts, before touching the bare metal up with white paint, and then I'll lacquer them to prevent any more rust from appearing again.
