I found the best way to avoid flicker is to use an ND filter and/or a very small aperture which gives low shutter speed.
My 5Dmk4 actually has a mode which synchronises with the mains frequency and only drops the shutter on the peak of the waveform. Used for indoor high speed sports photography so each exposure is the same.
