Quite interesting. I wonder if the lantern was already there and they decided to add their logo to the covers? Try old street view images.

Looking at those buildings permission for their standard 'M' couldn't be granted so this is the compromise.

Well that is one way to still allow companies to display their logos while maintaining the historic look of the surrounding area and buildings lol. I've seen similar things done elsewhere, keeps things looking nice!
