Bar area mode lighting onboard the advanced passenger train
Not my picture, this is from the advanced passenger train (APT) group but shows details of the fluorescent handrail lighting in the onboard bar. The bar makes extensive use of fluorescent mood lighting, mostly yellow and red. The electronic inverter can be seen that is supplied with 110v DC. It has to be DC so it can operate from the battery pack situated under the coach. APT was a tilting train project by British rail in the 70s and 80s that ultimately failed due to lack of funding and political will. The train is now a static exhibit at the Crewe heritage centre and has some interesting examples of fluorescent lighting.

Quite interesting! I hate to say it but for stuff like this LED does give designers a hell of a lot more freedom.
