Mazda Opalia 40w decorative filament lamps
Some very welcome recent Ebay finds. I believe the Opalia lamp was produced for quite some time by Mazda in France. Prior to this I only had a very well-used 60w(? - The etch has rubbed off) version which I had found in France on holiday. Something interesting to note is that the size of these seems slightly smaller compared to my older version - I wonder if these were made by Philips in later years (as Mazda was taken over by them)?

These are stunning, apart from the common candle I don’t think I’ve ever seen an elliptical GLS ever!

You'd be forgiven for thinking these were some kind of discharge lamp at first glance...

I wonder if these have actually come from 50 watt mercury lamp machinery?, and for whatever reason they were needed in the GLS division or were just experimental trials for decorative lamps? Given their rarity I can’t see why they would make elliptical lamp machinery from scratch in GLS factories?

I'd agree. Either shared or repurposed discharge lamp equipment would seem likely. Of course, could be entirely wrong and these might have been a big thing overseas and just something we never saw here?

Good to see you got these Smile
