Metropolitan Vickers SS51
|
Another globe lantern into the collection, but this time not a hideously oversized affair, but rather a much smaller and exceptionally stunning Metropolitan Vickers SS51. Released in the early 50's, this instantly recognisable lantern comprises of a cast aluminium canopy with barely any corrosion, and a milky bowl (which at one time would have been clear) and a glass refractor ring set upon two brackets inside the canopy. No other manufacture made anything that looked even anything alike, making it a very unique and sought after lantern for the collection.
Removed off a concrete bracket, I intend to restore the lantern and mount it on a swan neck bracket, a move I feel would really compliment the lanterns proportions. Restoration simply involves filling in the minicell hole and a complete respray in hammered silver, all other components being given a quick clean and polish.
