You know me too well. I like to shout when I feel justice hasn't be done!. Believe it or not they say it will be cheaper in the long run due to lower energy costs and improves the cities image. Next an email to SSE (PFI) - I'll publish their reply.

Thank you for your e-mail raising concerns about the Lighting upgrade at Whitehall Road. The lighting units on this road were upgraded at the beginning of our contract to bring the lighting to the required level. However the lighting columns have reached the end of their life and require replacement this has given us the opportunity to once again upgrade the lighting to energy saving LED lanterns.

I'm wondering if they have stock to do a pole top swap out when the lanterns fail - somehow I doubt it. They will just be left not working for weeks/months on end.
