Thorn 4, 6, 8W magnetic ballast inside the Endura 8W fluorescent fixture
Okay so I opened up the Endura 8W fluorescent fixture to see a Thorn ballast and starter - this can accommodate the 4W and 6W T5 tubes as well as the 8W tubes this fixture is designed to take

Nice! Proper old potted Thorn ballast, essentially a mini version of the ones fitted in the T12 pop packs of the time Cool
This method of holding/connecting the starter is better than the way a lot of newer ones did it with a fixed starter holder which was a little difficult to twist the starters out of sometimes in the narrow fittings.

Very nice fitting! The ballast will be near indestructible with it being so large.

@Beta 5: Oh yes exactly, it reminded me of the SRS Thorn ballast from that Thorn SRS weatherpack that I got from Windsor back in April - about the starter it is indeed a better method of fixation that I can replace the starter if needed Cool @Oliver: This is why I like the old larger than usual ballasts because they can maintain an optimum operating temperature especially in a very tight size of an 8W fluorescent fixture Smile Smile

Indeed, basically a scaled down version of one of those! I've just posted my 1990s Ring 8W batten I got a few years ago, it appears to be the same as this only it uses a newer ballast and starter holder, but the lamp holders and metal work appear to be identical Cool
