Ever get this fired up?

Not this particular one. I've tested some of the others... I think the capacitors within them have failed/failing. Some won't strike at all (cathodes glow), some will strike with rapid off/on switching, there's one that strikes reasonably reliably but seems to underdrive the lamps. I got some newer ones too (which have similar faults) which I think I'll be able to cut open and replace the capacitors, I don't fancy trying that with these seeing as they're filled with tar or pitch

Just a thought, when you tried to strike the tube, did it have an earthed metal surface next to it for it's entire length? Can be very hard to strike tubes on gear like this without....

At first no, I did put the (earthed) cover back on the fixture and it was still the same. I'll have another go with them soon & report back
