Today's Repair: Crompton Crompack 5ft Swith Start
Repaired this today. The original Crompton/Philips block ballast had burned out, and I mean burned out, literally looked like it'd been on fire & it smelled horrendous.

I stripped it down and washed the casing with hot soapy water, sanded down the internal paint around the ballast that had blistered and repainted, lastly I cleaned the lamp holders, end caps etc in the sink.

Threw it all back together with mostly new cable and the May & Christe ballast you can see here and it's good as new, apart from darkened paint externally around the ballast which can be seen here.

After all this it still has a slight smell of burned ballast, no idea when/if it'll wear off?

Mmmmm, you just have to love the smell of crispy ballast! To be fair, about the most disgusting smell there is, save for the customers house I'm sadly working in all week. Yuk!

This is the 3rd one of these I've rescued & repaired with burned out ballasts. The first wasn't too bad, didn't even smell. The second was as bad as this one pictured here. They have been on massive lighting circuits protected by 10a or 16a HRC fuses, when said fuse blows it will have been replaced many times, possibly with a bigger fuse before anyone bothered to investigate! Hence the ballast has probably overheated/fried more than once

If/when I get another as bad in the future I'll picture the mess & upload it before repairing
