Thats a first! , I took the lights out of ours, when I needed to rob the 2 E14 lamp holder out of it, but these get that greasy, I didn`t see fit to re-install anything.

The previous hood used to E14 candle bulbs but as with this hood, very little light reached the hob where it was required because there was no form of reflector. I converted those to GU10 halogen which worked really well. Ideally the light would be in a separate compartment from the fan, I could probably arrange this but would be a bit of a pain, so will see how it goes on. I think cooker hoods are well worth having though as they save the grease and dampness messing up the rest of the kitchen, we noticed a real difference when we got one in the mid 90s.

Thats sweet as. Nice conversion. We have a cooker hood with two lamps, pretty bright but as you say 50% is wasted. I'd have considered converting ours to fluorescent as you have but unfortunately its two seperate pieces of glass, so again, light would still be wasted sadly.
