GE F48 Power Groove (full view)
This isn't a real fitting, rather just a what I'd guess you could call a 'test board' (but we're looking at the lamps, not what they're mounted on!)...

Shown here are 4 General Electric 4-foot VHO 'Power Groove' lamps (this view to show the whole length).
The 'grooves' are to provide more surface area so it gives more light (why the first groove has a long space I don't know)
These are 1500ma lamp current & 110w each.
They're also a fair bit heavier than a 'normal' lamp

I've always been fascinated with these lamps and although I've never actually seen one personally they look amazing! Would love to get hold of one though.

Smart glass working engineering, I think those groves are pressed in whilst the tube is still hot.

Yes, the tube is heated on one side and then carbon moulds press in the grooves. Then rotate the tube and repeat on the other side. The long space creates a cold spot to lower the mercury pressure for optimum efficacy without having to use a long stem and reduced arc length to create a cold spot behinf

I always thought these were cool, I consider it just luck that I found some at a reasonable price.
...
I believe T17's & PG17's were actually made up until last year (quite surprising considering how rare it is to even see one in use)
I guess the few remaining fittings/lanterns will eventually be doomed to the scrap bin (especially if T12 VHO lamps are eventually discontinued)

I'd love to see "the making of" for one of these!

I figured there was some actual reason for the long space at one end.
