Philips 8-Foot T8 86w High Output
A pair of 8-foot high-output T8 lamps.
One with the RDC thingie removed to show its got a normal medium bi-pin endcap.

These actually seem like nice lamps.

I don't have the proper gear for it, so used a 2xF54T5 ballast (wired for 1-lamp mode) its actually probably not too far off spec. LOL

Maybe someone needs to figure out a way to make these work on GB switch-start gear!

I need some imported to the UK so I can try them in a 100W SS fitting!
Danny   [18 Mar, 2016 at 09:58 AM]
Yeh I'd like to try them too
Funkybulb   [18 Mar, 2016 at 04:06 PM]
Let me be a test subjet as i have alto T8 86 watts tube and a 8 foot pop pack to experment, let u know what result is. I did ran one on 125 watt gear. It banded up with in 45 mins of use. Talk about a megga overdrive:shock: i need get the specs for this lamp. Kev prolly will be a high chance it wont start reliably due to high ocv. Also this tube is close to 85 watt T12 spec. I think these prolly might keep 85 watt SRS going and from getting skipped maybe.

What about fitzy lp100 will them light?
Funkybulb   [18 Mar, 2016 at 04:57 PM]
it be like 125 watt tube on 100 watt gear but badly mismatch way let me put it that way for these HO. It going to need expermenting with much lower cap value than normal. It took a 5.5 on 60Hz to run a 110 watt Ho T12
And 2.5uf just blinks away like it EOL. It going to take at bit expermenting some where around 3.5 to 4uf caps to work even if i can get it to strike. If that dont work then i need add quickstart tranny to it.

Hmmm reckon there's any way some could be imported. Are these argon filled funky? I wonder how they'd react to 8 ft 85w quick start?
XmasLightGuy   [18 Mar, 2016 at 05:38 PM]
Someone on LG said they believe these are 430ma.. so that'd put the specs at something like: 86w/430ma/200v

---
Looks like Funkybulb already tried them on SS .. I was considering that myself (but without the cap, so 100w mode)

@Danny:
Might work depending if the specs are close, and it has a high enough OCV.

I'd love to someday get one of those 85w quickstart units to play with LOL
Funkybulb   [19 Mar, 2016 at 07:01 PM]
These lamp is 185 volt 460-550 mA
XmasLightGuy   [20 Mar, 2016 at 04:02 PM]
@Funkybulb:
Guess the F54T5 ballast I have for testing is actually underdriving it then..still nice & bright though.

Maybe I'll try a 2xF40T12 RS ... with that the current would be within spec. Don't think it'll have a high enough OCV to do anything though.

I did try it on my Thorn 8' SS gear (without capacitor) and just blinked like EOL, plus was deff over-running the filaments

I did ran F96T8 HO on the 446 univesial ballast it was a booger to strike up. I had to raise the input voltage on the 446 ballast to 145 volts. Then it struck up then i had to back voltage back down. I would recomend trying these on cold temp ballast. Also one the Thorn SS gear if u can find 3uF 3.5 uF 440v cap i would give that a shot. It will do two things bump up OCV also reduce current. Making a capactive ballast. 2nd prolly need a lamp in series with starter to eat some voltage up as i think these T8 have 4 volt cathode.

Anyone know how much it'd cost to get a case of these 8ft T8s couriered over to the UK ??? I would love to have some!!
Funkybulb   [29 Apr, 2016 at 07:15 AM]
Only way these 8 foot get sent across the pond is UPS as also not cheap.
Simon_R   [12 Mar, 2017 at 09:24 AM]
wonder why we did'nt get 8ft T8s? should'nt have thought they would have been subject to the E.U. ban.
Kev   [12 Mar, 2017 at 09:46 AM]
We had the 8' 100W Simon which was the energy saver but they kept it T12 as they were worried about them snapping! Mad I wish they did make them T8 as if they had done that 8 foots wouldn't of been subject to the hatrid they suffered in the mid 2000s where basically everyone came to the conclusion that because they were T12 8' were power hungry monsters where as in reality the 8' 100W 840 was almost 100Lm/W! Still good even by today's standards!
Simon_R   [12 Mar, 2017 at 10:50 AM]
The snapping issue did cross my mind after I left the comment Kev.I think it is a shame what has happened to the 8fts they seamed ideal for large installs (E.U.Grrrrr)
FrontSideBus   [12 Mar, 2017 at 02:43 PM]
Best thing I like about the 8 foot lamps is although they are very bright, they are dim to look at due to the large surface area and don't glare at all! Some of these new HO T5's is like looking at a SON arc tube!
XmasLightGuy   [12 Mar, 2017 at 04:48 PM]
Yep its a shame that 8-foots are viewed as big power hungry beasts (or whatever it is that creates such dislike).
XmasLightGuy   [12 Mar, 2017 at 04:51 PM]
I saw an ad on the local craigslist awhile back for someone that was giving away cases & cases of 8-footers (didn't say what type, but looked like T12 slimline)
Lightbulbfun   [17 Apr, 2024 at 03:51 PM]
just stumbled across these, dont think I have seen a Pre-Alto F96T8/HO tube before now, neat find! as for the discussion in the comments, officially these are rated for 0.395A 216V, but with a allowed current range of 350-595mA, the closest match in terms of magnetic control this side of the pond would ban 85W 8ft T12 ballast, one of these on SRS if it strikes I imagine would give a very nice fade in Smile I would love to get some 8ft T8s for my collection, just for the fact that we never did get any 8ft T8's apart from the ones that existed here in the 1950's (which I have not seen anyone ever find an example of sadly)
