1000W Osram GEC Shaw MBF (HQL) Mercury vapour lamps 20 years apart
I have showcased the GEC lamp before in my Gallery

but recently I spotted a much more modern Osram 1Kw lamp on ebay, and all was shown was its wrapper but it was cheap enough that I figured id take a punt

secretly hoping it would be a 400V lamp as I very much want to add one of those to my collection!

sadly it was not, but it was still a very interesting lamp in that is a very late Shaw made lamp, from May 1998 (Shaw closed in Y2K) date code o858

so it made for a very interesting comparison with my GEC lamp which was made in the same factory 20 years earlier!

they both have the same frame construction, but the Osram of Germany lamp has a more pointy bulb with a shallower frame support dimple than the GEC lamp

the Osram of Germany lamp also has a more modern form of cap attachment, although the cap itself looks older than the GEC lamp which has a rather modern looking angular cap

it is also worth noting that despite them both being Yttrium Vanadate (/DX in US terms) lamps, that the older GEC lamp does have a slight warmer colour to its phosphor which I find quite interesting!

they are the same length (although it was hard to photograph them without one always looking longer than the other!)

it also interesting to note the "7.5A" in the later Osram lamps order code, which is clearly to indicate this is a high current "low" voltage lamp

which makes me wonder if Osram of Germany, after taking over GEC, continued to make high voltage 1Kw mercury lamps? I cant say I have ever seen one but it would be interesting to know!

(it would be interesting to know who else in Europe/the UK made high voltage 1Kw mercury lamps in general, I know GEC and Thorn did, but I cant recall anyone else who might of?)

I hope you have enjoyed this comparison, and how its fun to see how 2 rather identical lamps on the surface can yield so many small interested detailed differences :)

Oooh I do apologise! I did wonder who I was bidding against and I had hoped it was not a collector!, annoyingly I had it on my watch list a week before, but ebay never reminded me it was ending (and I forgot!) and of course thats when it ended with 0 bids! if I had remembered to have bid then than I would not have ended up bidding against you! once again I do apologise, had I known, id of happily let you take it!

Don't need to apologise to me or anybody tbh! That's how it goes Cool In fact it's more interesting to see these together!
