Victory Column Lights
|
All around the Victory Column, which is located in the middle of the Tiergarten in Berlin, are these fancy looking old columns and lanterns.
I didn't check what lamps was in them despite being open at the bottom but they are probably burning SON lamps but as there are quite a lot of gas lamps in service in Berlin, they could may well be gas!
The column was designed by Heinrich Strack in 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War but by the time it was inaugurated in 1873, Prussia had defeated Austria and its German allies in the 1866 Austro-Prussian War and also France in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War, giving the statue a whole new purpose.
