I always loved the way lighting was done on trains, even the old incandescent lighting was kind of cool but then the fluorescent came in the 60s, especially on the intercity coaches, it was really well done, plenty of light with no dazzle. The incandescent lights where replaced during the 70s and 80s as part of refurbs with fluorescent and there was a real noticeable difference in light levels from 60w GLS to 4ft 40w T12. I can't see what the advantage there is though, power savings would be so negligible against the load of train motors. It does look crap, LED for the sake of LED. It worked well before, why change it?

Another perfect example where a whole new LED geartray with the diodes spaced out would look a million miles better than retrofit lamps...

Probably easier to fit tubes than a whole new fitting or tray?

Indeed but a little bit of extra effort wouldd make so much better a result tbh.
