Dutton Locks: Thorn Alpha 9's 2
While having fun on the River Weaver aboard the vintage steam tug, SS Daniel Adamson, I noticed some old concrete columns with some old gear-in-head Thorn Alpha 9's as we passed through Dutton locks.

They look like they originally had some sort of top-entry tungsten lantern such as a G.E.C Z5500 or similar but at some point in the past they were modified with an awkward looking right-angle adapter so they can be fitted with side-entry Thorn Alpha 9's.

The middle column appears to have either lost it's lanterns or was never converted in the first place to due to the increased output of the SOX lamps.

Dying sight these days. Love concrete columns, shame they stopped making them.

Got to watch these GEC wavy brackets... they have a tendency to rust out in the join and then just snap clean off!

Which is exactly what happened to a seemingly immaculate example in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales. No one knew how bad it was till the bracket fell off in high winds. Both deep bowl Alpha 9's obviously completely destroyed.

Bodge 1970's style, looks better than a proper install in 2019

Interesting I missed this photo back then Smile, Saltersford locks in Barnton, Northwich had exactly the same set up when my auntie Christine lived there in the mid 80s

The waterways can be a bit of a time capsule.
