Long dead SONpaks.
|
A recent walk along the Birkenhead waterfront and old docks took me past the old Central Hydraulic pumphouse.
The building was built in 1869 to house the steam engine, pumps and accumulators to both pump water in and out of the "great float" dock system and to provide water hydraulic power for the opening of lock gates, movement of swing bridges and operation of other machinery. The building was bombed during the war and the repairs made are quite evident.
It has been derelict for a very, very long time and these two SONpaks are some of a few that are looking quite sad indeed!
