Remote monitoring equipment?
Was fuelling up at a Tesco petrol station in Broughton, Flintshire when I noticed that every single Philips Mini 300 halide downlighter under the forecourt canopy had one of these fitted to it.
Looks like a mini-photocell on the end of some conduit going into some sort of control box with a placard stating that this is remote monitoring equipment and must not be removed.
Just what they hell are they monitoring?

How strange!

The Morrisons ones stay dim in the daytime and dim at night but they have a PIR which brightens up individual ones. Im not sure what those ones do other than the obvious such as maybe displaying on a panel / computer which ones are failed.

Doubt they'll be dimming a metal halide
Monitoring the output of the halide so they can try and prove how much better LED is

My imagination goes towards "do something" solution to fufill a "we'll do something about it" promise, following an out of the blue customer complaint (possibly involving a hot restrike after a power interruption, and customer tripping/doint something stupid/getting scared while in the dark) ?

The box says it's for remote monitoring which is why I think it's to detect lamp failure.

It seems so, but wouldnt the maintenance personnel (who come for scheduled checkup on the rest of the equipment anyway) be able to look up while they are there ?

There’s no other ‘run up’ lighting is there?, could this be a photocell that activates once the halide has run up??

No other lighting under the canopy. They wouldn't need one on every single unit for that surely anyway?
Ash   [20 May, 2021 at 09:53 AM]
No and normally run up lighting is controlled electrically (current sense relay on the HID lamp) or by a timer anyway. This being under each lamp whispers "to ensure proper light levels", as if with one lamp out there is some danger that requires immediate attention

It does seem that it's some sort of life test experiment, witch the hours each lamp does until failure being logged. Using them just to detect failures seems overkill?
