Aux electrode glow discharge.

I was playing with a 400w self ballasted mercury-halogen lamp and I thought it was interesting how the starting resistor isn't quite of a value high enough to prevent a bit of leakage during normal operation.

It appears as two separate arcs in the photo but in reality is was just one switching very rapidly between two points.
