Aux electrode glow discharge.
I was playing with a 400w self ballasted mercury-halogen lamp and I thought it was interesting how the starting resistor isn't quite of a value high enough to prevent a bit of leakage during normal operation.

It appears as two separate arcs in the photo but in reality is was just one switching very rapidly between two points.

That's a superb macro shot Mark, very clear indeed! Interesting to see this aux electrode glow discharge that would not be possible without filters. Cool

Yeah an ND1000 is pretty much black when you look at it.
