It has a similar concept to TV backlights. They also have a plastic pane with dots.

Well some do but edge-lit LCD TV's are shit lol. Prefer matrix backlights.

It's usually the smaller TV that are edge lit. Larger ones have the LED matrix. Older ones are the same but used CCFL instead. The CCFLs are quite reliable.

Online job. I just saw them and was like “that looks cool lolâ€. I’ve got nowhere to use it but I may see if I can non-destructively open it and see how it works. A row of them in bare pendants would look cool!
