Poundland LED lamps.
Was in Poundland today and thought I might pick up a few of their LED lamps to play with.
The GLS and candle lamps are rated at 5w with a claimed output of 330lm and lifespan of 15,000 hours.
The GU10 is 3w & 220lm.

Probably the most basic design of LED lamps I've seen, just a simple capacitive dropper, diode bridge and resistor.
Easily hackable though, you can swap out the capacitor for one of different value to change the power level.

Run quite cool too, only warm to touch.
Seem reasonably bright with a decent 3000k colour.
Probably won't last 15,000 hours but who cares for £1 each!

BigClive on Youtube has done a few vids on these lamps well worth a watch (and his channel overall is Great) there built better then most of the eBay specials thankfully (so they wont explode/become live and kill you! hopefully...)

I'm testing the GLS one in the downstairs hallway and it seems brighter than the 11w Genie that was in there but that might just be because all of the light is being directed mostly downwards. It did give off a "hot electronics" smell for about 15 minutes but has cleared. BigClive is awesome Smile

I'm tempted to try one of these. Can't go far wrong for a quid.

Can go very wrong for a pound if it falls apart in say a desk light and you touch it and get a belt, or the thing bursts into flames and burns your house down!

Lol I agree rich!

Oh there is no way I'd trust any of these enough to leave them on in an empty house!

Well it's a mixed bag. The GLS lamp seems quite happy and only gets moderately warm but when I tested the candle lamp it got so hot that 3 LED modules de-soldered themselves from the board! It's a good source of B22 caps for DIY projects anyway as they come apart and go back together quick easily and non destructively. I'll be using one for a DIY 18w PL-C or 16w 2D adapter. I've not tested the GU10 yet.
