What new tubes are you using rob?
The new tubes are Philips standard whites. They're happy to let me order them up, I ordered another box yesterday and noticed that they were almost half the price they were in January for the same order! The tube that had gone mercury starved was a Wickes branded tube, that must have been from a batch of insignificant tubes I donated to work years ago.

For some strange reason I enjoy spotting mercury starved tubes out in the wild...

As kids who grew under switchstart and good quality lamps, to us normally working lamps - have been usual sight, glow in the ends - usual, flashing and rectifying - usual. The Mercury starved was unusual and not obvious. It's only in the last few years that we started appreciating just plain intact working lighting for what it is... To me the same can be said about cycling HIDs, as kid i was able to watch them cycle for quite a while !
