Crusty 5ft SRS Ballast, Will it Work?

Here you see what I think is a Parmar ballast, 5ft SRS, it is fitted in a Simplex 5ft batten that came from a haul of fittings I got from my old work some time ago. Said fitting had a T8 lamp in it that I vaguely recall seeing the ends glowing for at least two years or so. It's obviously been extremely hot and combined with the damp environment has caused this mess.

So, will it work? Place your bets...

Well I'm sure you're all sat on the edge of your seats...... Yes it works, the lamp fades into life beautifully, however it's very noisy. Doesn't seem like the kind of noise that'll quieten down with use either! I think this one will be put to retirement.
