Thorn AME69046.4 65w SS Choke, Refurbished (now dead)

This was in a sad state when I acquired it, quite rusty and had been left outside for some time.

I completely stripped it back to mostly bare metal & painted it with zinc primer, then gave it a top coat of Plastikote Satin 'Porcelain'. Before I did this, I scanned the original etch, so I then printed it out and stuck it on. Finally it had two coats of satin lacquer.

Radiator enamel is a good idea as chokes probably run at similar temperatures? I had this running 24/7 for 3 days & it tested completely clear of earth before I painted it! Oh well...

Just a thought - you've not gone and got zinc primer in any of the terminals or in the 2 small holes in the backplate have you as that would certainly conduct! I make a point of using only non-conductive paint on ballast restorations - just in case!

The terminals were covered as was the small hole on the back. I wouldn't of thought any zinc primer got in & even if it did aren't these filled? I dunno I'll see if I can investigate further...

Not uncommon for the polyester resin to crack over time, so it's always possible. Unlikely I know, but still theoretically possible. If you covered the terminals and the hole then no idea, you've probably just got unluckily Sad

had quiet a few of the rounded corner SRS thorn ballasts burn out on me, all looked fine when i got them but after some light use they failed, mind all had been derelict building salvages, so maybe damp gets in them over time

I'll second that, also had some of the SRS ballasts in that type of can fail. Also rescues from derelict buildings. The later, open-canned ones seem to fair better!

How did yours fail Lampy, earth leakage? I've still got this knocking about somewhere, I will cut it open one day to see what happened, although I'd bet all the filling has shrunk/cracked as Rich suggested and it'll be corroded inside
