Fern-Howard Moonlight 16w 2D Bulkhead - Inside Bits

Picked this up at a car boot sale at the weekend, a Fern Howard Moonlight FH790 16w 2D Bulkhead.

This is a bit of a weird thing TBH, it has a full plastic constrction and had no reflector so the light output isn't quite as good as it could be. Also has no capacitor. It does have a built in miniature photocell, but that's dead sadly & I had to bypass it.

It has a good quality May & Christe ballast which has seen a stuck starter for quite a long time by the look of it. The lamp fitted is a GB GE 835 that looks unused.

Nice simple 2D fitting. Interesting how it says use ONLY GE branded 2D's.

Whats the photcell you got a pic of it. Some of these came with special infra red photocells that do not detect artificial light

Not sure Danny & no pic at the minute, I'll get one later. The photocell's switch remained open whether the cell was covered or not

Once had a Hilclare Lighting made 16w 2-D bulkhead similar to this, as in, no gear tray or reflector. Sadly, as it was white, the UV destroyed the plastic mount the lampholder clipped into and it fell apart. Pity this hasn't got a reflector, you'd lose far less light into the black background if it did!

If I put this to use, I'll probably retrofit a reflector of some sort. I'm wondering if the reflectrors from one of them Tamlite bulkheads may be able to be modified/cut down to fit seeing as they're in the spares bin now

You could do that, or to be honest, just a foil pie dish will be fine. Loads of fittings from the 70's / 80's only had something like that in them anyway!

I have a NOS one of these, and like you pointed out, light output really isn't where it should be cause of that missing reflector. Like Rich has said, a pie tin reflector would do the trick perfectly here. I'm gonna be fitting mine with one to try and increase output. The larger Minstrel is the same also, so looks a lot dimmer than it should be.

lol yes I've seen pie dish fittings before. I guess it works though, so will probably do just that. I've just found the pic of your Minstrel on LG Dave, a nice bulkhead that be!
