The ballast overheating have nothing to do with the shorted pins in the adapter (it is not RS, there are no heater coils supplying the filaments directly). The thing is, that with the lower power draw of the T5 adapter, the ballast worked continuously near the resonance point (where with a proper lamp it only goes briefly through it when starting). T5 adapter was probably not too happy either, getting higher voltage from the ballast (in the perpetual starting condition) instead of the 240V it was designed for

GEC SRS gear is pants. I've got 4, 65w SRS GEC fittings, all have now had new Thorn ballasts fitted in them....
