Holophane Widerlite 18w PL-C Bulkhead - Opened Up

Here you see inside the brand new old stock, circa 2002 vintage Holophane Widerlite 18w PL-C Bulkhead. Came fitted with this GE 827 lamp & Chinese GE 155/500 starter, under the tray is a May & Christe ballast and a Cambridge Capacitor. I've only seen these fixtures in 80w MV apart from this one.

I wonder why they chose not to go with a 2-pin lamp and just not bother with the starter?

Interesting bulkhead I like this a lot. Didn’t know this option was available!

We went on holiday at Pontins in Southport once, all the lighting around the chalets were these, but the bowls were a bit yellowed

A yellowed bowl's odd as they're glass? It does have some kind of frosted coating inside though so could be that. I don't know what said coating is, but it scrapes off quite easily

That coating will likely be just a frosting paint, its basically just a matt lacquer which can over time yellow. The very early ones however were acid etched, I have two Widerlites myself, one GLS from the early 50's and a MBF example from the 80's, and both appear to have the etched glass.

Nice fitting, looks like this could last a very long time in service, from when lighting was still good (and interesting!)
