Yes i think this is what they were for! Oneof these turned up at the last meet... no stuff as cool as this getting made any more sadly!

Nice find! I think this was for ballasting 40w fluorescent tubes.

First time I'd seen one too until getting this one, I only know it's a Ballast lamp because the previous owner told me.
