weird looking columns , they square all the way down to the bottom?

Yep! Whole column is square all the way down. So the door area is pretty tight. I have got a picture inside this column of the gear, 2 part relay and cutout all fitted in there!

lol, they look way to thin on the cross sectional area, dont look like a column as such, wonder if they get away with the small cross section as its square so stronger

When these columns are knocked down, they just bend straight over (does depend how bad the knock is) they can twist as well from a knock, and some from what I see even twist / bend over time. There is one near my house under a big old tree and this is bent from the door area
