Stinky ballast, stinky garage and a dead 2ft 40w tube

I made a 2ft 40w fitting recently using a couple of regular 2ft ballasts in parallel. I used a couple of well used/abused ballasts from them dimable 2ft weather pack gear trays I acquired ages ago (and some of you also have now).

Sadly this one wasn't happy being put back into use after being abused for years then left outside for some time! It tested out fine and seemed to run well, but I left a tube on test and came back a few hours later to a terrible smell and the tube unlit.

This has failed short circuit so has killed the tube, and now my fitting stinks, my garage stinks and I can still taste it hours later. Yuck!

So be warned if anyone is mad enough to actually be using these ballasts, they might be a bit past it!

The QS transformers are well worth having, even if the rest is bin fodder. But yeah they were worse that I initially expected, as the sample the the lad gave me (before he brought the job lot) was in much better condition as it was obviously a newer replacement.

@Danny, Ditto! I gave both these ballasts a good run first on a crappy T8, they ran fine, nice and quiet and not overly hot, no earth leakage and both tested the same resistance, also the other one is still working fine. I guess these may test ok but the insulation must degrading, or I just got unlucky with this particular one.

I can smell that from here. Are you sure it was a ballast and not a mimic? (Wonder if anyone will get the reference)
