Feeling hot hot hot!
Here you see the darkened paint on the casing of a Crompack fixture that came to me with a burned out Philips/Crompton 'block' ballast. The paint on the inside around the ballast had mostly blistered off and had to be sanded & repainted. The ballast looked like it had been on fire for a short while.

This is what happens when lighting circuits are protected by rather large fuses which get replaced several times as they keep blowing without investigating.

The fixture is now repaired and working again

I spotted a 1970's Beta 5 lantern in the skip at work that has had a ballast fire, the smell was horrible and worst thing is i touched the lantern before realizing and the stink staid on my hands for a good 3 days after no matter how many times i washed them.

I wonder how many years service this Crompack has done? 40 years would make it 1977, which would be about right I think?

Any dates on the capacitor?

Says 1966 on the capacitor, but that's the British Standard date, not manufactured date
