El-cheapo Chinky-Chonky H3 HID kit.
Tried to get a picture of this tiny little lamp at full power but the small size makes it hard. Pea sized arc tube!
This is obviously being driven on DC instead of AC!
When I can be bothered I'll probe this with the scope and see what's going on!

These do indeed have a xenon gas filling as they start up at quite a high initial brightness but the colour rendering is very poor for about 5-10 seconds until the halide dose vapourises and joins the discharge mix. The halide salts can be seen on the arc tube wall and at one end of the discharge column!

Theres also not a full halo around the arc body, is there a noticeable uneven colour to it?, or is it too small to tell?

It's not really noticeable, at least in the beam of the headlight. It's a projector unit so gets focussed through a lens anyway. The uneven arcstream might have something to do with it being a DC arc!

The xenon is at high pressure. Here it is lights strong at turning on the lamp. And you can't start it with a regular HID 4-5KV ignitor.
Automotive MH lamps are working at AC in their headlights. If this arc here is really DC, this may not be good to the electrodes.

It was running DC. I had the scope on it. They were shit anyway. Both lamps I had suffered cracked arc tubes.

Regarding to lamp stability during run-up: Have you used an automotive HID ballast, which have a boosted current, or other stuff?
And which halides this lamp have?
