Philips 3U Parallel 20W CFL
Got at the car boot sale. A Philips 20W 3U Parallel CFL. Such a shame these have been discontinued because the light it gives out is softer than todays CFLS due to the slightly thicker tubes. Also I read up on Zelandeth's site is that they are cold start (instant start) meaning if used with a lot of on/off switching, the sputtering will wear out the electrodes!

To be fair, despite the instant start I don't think I've ever actually had a Philips CFL of this style fail due to old age. I've always moved house before getting to that stage!

I've also managed to obtain the CFLS (GE and Philips) from my Aunt's house this year as she taken them down for LED lamps! A couple of the GE lamps have got massive sputtering sock but they still managed to keep going! Also last year I bought a box of 6 Philips SL-E Pro CFLS that are 16W and the one in the upstairs landing has got some faint blackening as its been in use since October 2017

These tri-turn lamps were quality, I had two in my kitchen for years, until I smashed one whilst carrying the lawn mower through to the back garden one afternoon Rolling Eyes

Those are IC controlled and warm start with proper timed preheat, to my knowledge. I've got loads of 15W and a 23W one.

They were good these. I used to have in the upstairs lobby. Adding to what Zel said i've never seen a philips CFL die, only go dim with age. I guess the "last for years" propaganda was right after all!

You always find at least one of these in every empty house!

Childhood memory these! Id love to put one into use but only have one sadly.

Its the same I only found one at the car boot if it was more of these I get 2x more!! However my confidence to use it for the downstairs landing fixture has shot up thanks to what Zelandeth and Lasagafield said about not seeing an old school Philips electronic ballasted CFL fail

The only time i've seen these dead was in a chandelier in Spain back in 2007 there was a mix if these and German made Osrams and there was quite a few of each dead.

Thats still a rare sight though. The only Philips CFL that krapped out on me was a MASTER PL 23W BC base CFL its not stone dead it just runs at half brightness and with a buzz in the ballast

I’ve got an 11w Philips PL-E in a table lamp in the living room that is on pretty much all the time somebody is in, which is almost always. There are some amazing wear marks forming!

I have a box full of these in different wattages, I’ve not decided yet if I’m going to preserve them all or part with some :-/

My house used to have one of these years and years ago in the landing light. It got used for long hours and was eventually binned (not by me) when it took too long to warm up. The cathodes were very black too.
