I used to like how old laptops had these. I remember the old XP Toshiba satallite pros had loads of LEDs near the touchpad. You could still see them when the lid was down.

Have Thinkads T60, T61, T400 with the same screen and LEDs. Some of the best laptops ever made, and i still use them to this day

I whacked in as much RAM as it could take, an SSD and a C2D T7400 which makes it zip along quite nicely for web browsing and word processing. Tempted to source a T61 motherboard to fit into it to create a FrankenPad lol, much better CPU and RAM options then.

I remember when dad's old Panasonic Toughbooks had all this lot on it.

I use ultimately Linux. It works perfectly even with the latest Plasma (one of the most resource demanding desktops), even with the stock C2D and max. 3GB RAM that the T60 supports. (The problem there comes when compiling big stuff like libreoffice or web browsers, that genuinely needs 4GB RAM minimum, for that i compile on a desktop instead)

This came with a 32 bit 1.6gig core duo which was a bit rubbish lol. Ultimately I didn’t get this to do anything serious, it was just a cheap toy to play about with. Mad to think this would have cost upwards of £1800 when new. I am tempted to get a new Lenovo ThinkPad now though...

Great thing about Linux is, unless you actually run something demanding, you could have a P4 HT and it'll still be very responsive. As long as you have decent RAM and for something like Plasma a GPU that supports some basic acceleration like an Intel 915/945
