SON, SOX and LED/MH
I was surprised to notice that the new Microsoft Flight Simulator does actually indeed show the various lighting technologies...
Here I am on approach to Liverpool airport and you can see the orange SOX, the golden SON and White LED/MH.
They use Bing maps data for the scenery and building placement so maybe they use night time satellite imagery for the lighting.

The red lights visible in the distance on the horizon is from the offshore wind farm that we have!

I’m also wondering if that’s an original night photo of Liverpool superimposed over the game?, it seems a lot to program from scratch! Shocked

Have you tried flying low to the ground to see just how detailed it looks?, or being a simulator will it not let you do that? Rolling Eyes

The scenery is VERY detailed in this. It basically uses high resolution satellite imagery as a base and then uses an advanced algorithm to place buildings where they should be! I imagine they do something similar for the night lighting, using a satellite image to work out where the lights are.

Each one of those balls of light is a real simulated light source but there are no actual lamp posts so they just sort of hover above the ground lighting it up... If you are flying a plane and can see lamp posts then you are doing it wrong lol. This sim is fantastic... when you are flying at night, the streetlights illuminate the clouds above just like in real life!
